Cost of Living
The New England and Northwest region is one of the most affordable areas in Australia to live in. Accommodation costs are lower than in major cities. The cost of transport, food and entertainment is also very reasonable.
You will need about AU$10,000 for living expenses in each year of study. However, you may need more money than this to cover initial costs for accommodation, textbooks and other expenses. Things like laundry, transport, recreation and entertainment can cost at least AU$1,000 a year. Recreation and entertainment are matters of personal taste; the amount you spend varies, depending on your interests and your budget.
Costs for accommodation and food can be reduced by sharing with friends and budgeting carefully. The cost of living will vary, depending on the kind of accommodation you choose.
Students have opportunity to sample the food from many nations, including Chinese, Italian, Thai, Greek, Malaysian and many more. Most shopping centres and stores are open 6-7 days a week with trading hours generally 9:00am -5:00pm. In some towns there are supermarkets which operate 24 hours a day. You can buy fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, seafood, frozen and canned foods, bread, grains and toiletries.
Banking: The main types of financial institutions in Australia offering financial services are banks, credit unions and building societies. Business hours for most banks are from 9.30 am to 4.00 pm, Monday to Thursday, and 9.30 am to 5.00 pm on Fridays (excluding public holidays). Automatic Teller Machines provide easy access to cash outside normal banking hours.
