Step 1: What are AMES Enrolled Nurse Scholarships?
If you are awarded a scholarship, you will study Diploma in Nursing (Enrolled/ Division 2 Nursing) (HLT51607) from the Health Training Package. If you successfully complete this qualification, you can seek enrolment with the Nurses and Midwives Board for New South Wales (NMB) to work as an Enrolled Nurse.
The course starts on Monday 3rd May 2010 and takes 13 months to complete. The theoretical component of the course is made up of 6 academic blocks at Gunnedah Campus interspersed with clinical practice in a variety of health facilities. You will be a full-time student during this period. Whilst the academic blocks will be run over three days per week at TAFE, the clinical placements and assessments at various public hospitals within the New England and North West Region may involve shift work and you will need your own transport. Some clinical placements will be delivered during the TAFE vacation periods. Clinical placement is a compulsory component of this program.
Each AMES scholarship pays all your tuition and assessment costs over the 13 months of your training. Students are responsible for the cost of their textbooks, equipment, stationery, uniforms (approximately $800), travel and accommodation.
Note - before commencing the clinical component of the course you will also have the additional expense of undertaking an Australian Federal Police criminal record check (approximately $56) as well as the cost of ensuring that you are fully immunised (cost varies).
The scholarship period ends in June 2011. You may not defer or extend your scholarship. In particular, if you have not completed the course by the end of 2011 you must complete the course at your own expense.
To be endorsed as an Enrolled Nurse with the NMB, you must demonstrate English language proficiency and sufficient physical and mental capacity to practise as a nurse in a range of health care facilities. In particular, if you were educated overseas, you must have achieved a score of 7.0 or more in each band (reading, writing, speaking and listening) of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) within the past 24 months, or ‘B’ levels in the Occupational English Test (OET).
Please note: AMES scholarships are for pre-employment training. If you are awarded a scholarship you are a TAFE student. You are not employed by TAFE NSW or by NSW Health or by anyone else. If you complete your course and gain enrolment through the NMB, you can seek work.
